    The UN has provided evidence detailing violence and abuses carried out in the Central African Republic by mercenaries working as an arm of Russia’s Ministry of Defense. Russia must immediately stop the violence and hold those responsible accountable.

    In two weeks, millions of Syrians will be cut off from food, clean water, medicine and vaccines if the UN Security Council does not act with urgency to reauthorize cross-border humanitarian access. We must renew and expand the mandate now.

    At yesterday’s ministerial meeting on Syria in Rome, I underscored the importance of reauthorizing and expanding the ability of the United Nations to provide life-saving cross-border assistance to the Syrian people.

    Proud to nominate Amb. Todd Buchwald for election to Committee Against Torture. Given his international law expertise, especially accountability for perpetrators of atrocities, I can think of no stronger candidate to monitor implementation of the Convention Against Torture.

    As everyone made clear to me when I visited the Syrian border, there is no alternative for cross-border humanitarian assistance. The UN Security Council must reauthorize and expand that assistance in order to give the Syrian people a future.

    Those responsible for the bombing of a village market in northern Tigray, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians, must be held accountable. We call on the Ethiopian authorities to ensure the victims receive immediate medical access, and for an independent investigation.
