We would like to pass along a big thank you to your grandfather. Veterans like him paved our future!
Petty Officer Miller was a true Navy hero. After his ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo
@PearlHarbor
, he rescued his Captain, then manned a 50 caliber deck gun and fought the enemy until the abandon ship order was given. Well deserved, shipmate!
PO Miller was a cook and not trained to use that weapon. Which makes it more impressive. Racism of the day denied him the congressional Medal of Honor
My Uncle Jack died alongside Mr. Miller on the USS Liscome Bay in Nov 1943. Today that disaster remains the highest KIA from an American carrier and no one knows the name USS Liscome Bay. RIP heroes. GO NAVY!
They do now, and this shipmate honors their sacrifice. Go navy !
Just in time for the 2020's. I wonder how long it took for Miller to even receive the personal recognition from the US Navy. But African Americans. We are a patient group
USS Miller (FF-1091), originally (DE-1091) was a Knox-class destroyer escort in the United States Navy. She was named for Cook Third Class Doris "Dorie" Miller, who was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions at the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Finally! It took forever to recognize his courage & patriotism! I saw his story on @CBSSunday & it brought me to tears. Heroism is not defined by race, or gender, it is carried on the deepest roots of our souls. I salute you Doris Miller!
