#GoNavy! That said, when are you going to start building proper frigates again? -
The US Navy doesn’t need ‘proper frigates’, it’s instead focused on a large fleet of medium sized, multipurpose destroyers. The LCS program is to fill roles that the destroyers cannot do in coastal waters and low level missions, most of which don’t require a full size frigate
-
I actually know what both classes of LCS were designed to do. It’s undergunned and riddled with problems, and require Burke class escorts whenever they’re in anything other than a low threat environment. They’re being tasked as GP escorts, which they were not built to do.
-
Neither of the LCS classes were designed for a specific mission archetype, only to fit the LCS brief, so not sure what you’re going on about. They may be undergunned-because they are designed for low threat areas like the littoral, they are not going to be used in high threat ops
-
The LCS are being used as fleet escorts, which they were not designed for. They can barely defend themselves in their current configuration, limiting their usefulness in independent missions. They need to be upgunned or have a class above them that’s not a Burke, i.e., a frigate.
-
Agree on the current poor use of them. They are designed to operate in shallow waters, bays, marshland etc - not GP frigates. If the US wants to use them for global ops, they need a larger variant with AEGIS, VLS system, full caliber gun, more CIWS and possibly an extended hull.
-
Not possibly. They traded capability for cost and went small and now can’t fit a lot of weapons or sensors because the thing is just too damned small
-
If they stick with its envisaged role - Fjords, Alaskan bays, estuarys, lakes, island chains, then it’s a perfect vessel. But that’s for one particular (and very niche) role, but it can’t do everything like it appears the US is trying to do with it.

Buying the ships but no funding for the mission packages. Might as well be a yacht!

Toothless, fragile, unstealthy, pure pork barrel expenditures. The Navy didn’t want more LCS’s. They need more subs, destroyers, cruisers, and auxiliaries.
