    The American service members who gave their lives were heroes. Heroes who have been engaged in a dangerous, selfless mission to save the lives of others. We have a continuing obligation — a sacred obligation — to their families that will last forever.

    Despite extraordinary dangers and risks, we were able to evacuate more than 100,000 people in just a matter of days. We can — and we must — complete our mission. We will not be deterred by terrorists. We will not let them stop our mission. We will continue the evacuation.

    The service members who were killed and wounded in today’s terrorist attacks are heroes. They put their lives on the line to defend our civilian personnel, the civilian personnel of our allies and partners, Americans, third-country nationals, and Afghans seeking safety.

    We’re on track to complete our mission in Afghanistan by Aug 31, provided the Taliban continue to cooperate, & there are no disruptions. But let me be clear, there's no deadline on our work to help remaining U.S. citizens & Afghan partners who decide they want to leave to do so.

    and we are a defensive Alliance. In order to deter threats, must demonstrate unity of purpose and credible military capability with supporting its Allies.

    Thank you for a quick decision to deploy a Counter Hybrid Support Team for Lithuania to advise on how to deal with hybrid threats. This is concrete NATO support for Lithuania and a demonstration of Allied solidarity in action.

    Yesterday, August 22nd, the U.S. military evacuated ~10,400 personnel out of Afghanistan, and U.S. military assisted coalition aircraft moved another ~5,900 – more than 16,000 in total.

    Update: In the last 24 hours, 28 U.S. military flights evacuated approximately 10,400 people from Kabul. 61 coalition aircrafts evacuated approximately 5,900 people. Since 8/14 the U.S. has evacuated and facilitated the evacuation of approximately 37,000 people.
