  5. These marmots can thank the volcanoes! The mountains around are the cooled insides of ancient volcanoes, and the plateaus to the south are cooled lava flows. This influences climate and vegetation and creates a home for these little guys! NPS

  9. Volcanoes in Arizona? You bet! The San Francisco Volcanic Field is young - it erupted only 935 years ago & was witnessed by people inhabiting the area. is responsible for monitoring & reporting activity.

  10. All volcanoes in California were at normal background levels of activity last week. Did you know lava comes in leopard print? This amygdaloidal basalt, with vesicles filled by secondary minerals, is found in the Berkeley Hills volcanic field.

  16. Ever think an earthquake in one place is the same as an earthquake in another? It turns out that the style of an earthquake varies depending on its cause. Today's sees what's shaking.

  17. video (Feb 1) shows recent activity at the lava lake in Halema‘uma‘u crater. Lava upwelling at the western vent flows into the lake, where bubbling is commonly present. In eastern portion of crater, a steep spatter cone has produced vigorous spattering, small lava flows.

  18. Video compilation of the lava lake contains footage taken from the air and ground. Observations of the eruption, which was active on Jan 27, show spattering in the active lava lake in the western portion of Halema‘uma‘u as well as gas-jetting sounds from a small spatter cone.
