  3. Happy ! Wetlands are critical for many species of birds, of course, but they have a lot of benefits for humans too.

Do you know inland and coastal wetlands only consist of <4% global biome area? Wetlands help water storage which is essential to living creatures. Muddy soil holds more water than sand and vegetation aids to store water. Join on Feb2 for the values of wetlands!

Although it can kill large prey, such as mule deer fawns or coyote pups, the golden eagle generally eats small to midsize reptiles, birds and mammals. A golden eagle confronts a desert bighorn sheep at Desert National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada. Photo by USFWS

Yellow-rumped Warblers are the only warbler species that can digest wax, enabling them to eat the waxy berries of bayberry & wax myrtle bushes. Access to these foods is thought to allow them to winter farther north than other warblers- some as far N as Maine.

This bird species' name, spectabilis, derives from its "remarkable display," referring to male in breeding plumage. Its genus name, somateria, gives a clue to how this bird can spend winter in the coldest ocean waters. WHAT IS IT? . And no, you may not google it.
