  3. Today in 1973, Elton John had a hit with “Crocodile Rock.” They may not dance, but American crocodiles for sure rock. They aren’t showing off their big teeth. Sunning themselves with their mouths open, or "gaping," helps them regulate their body temperature. Photo by USFWS

  4. Have you ever said to yourself? “Wow, that is a beautiful crayfish?” Well, meet the blue crayfish, a species of burrowing crayfish. Burrowing crayfish help our environment by aerating soil, recycling nutrients among the soil layers and providing habitat to other species.

The hairy woodpecker is very similar to its smaller counterpart, the downy woodpecker. But look at that enormous beak! The hairy uses its large beak to drill directly into the trunks of trees, whereas the downy is often limited to the smaller branches. 📸Michael Schramm/USFWS

  7. Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” was published today in 1845, but these birds are awesome, not creepy. When flying, ravens roll, dive and flip. They are also known to drop sticks and then dive and catch them, all in midair. Photo by Tom Koerner/USFWS

  9. Adult valley elderberry longhorned beetles eat the nectar, flowers and leaves of elderberry bushes. Eggs are laid on elderberries, and larvae live inside the stems before emerging as adults. What are some other “picky eaters” of the wildlife world?

Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean but are home to 25% of all known marine species. They also protect our coastlines from wave action and tropical storms. Coral reef at Palmyra Atoll in the Pacific. /Jim Maragos, USFWS
