The extent of #drought across the U.S. and Puerto Rico declined yet again to just 36%, the lowest it has been since Sept. 2020. The population affected dropped as well to 78.9 million people.

On Oct 25, 2022, drought coverage in the Lower 48 hit 62.9%, the highest amount since Oct 2012. Conditions were looking quite bleak.
We’re now at 42.9%, a 20% drop.
What happened? A lot of precip across much of the Lower 48 over the last 60 days.

The drought was a multi-billion-dollar event impacting water resources, ecosystems, and ag. The report will help w/ future preparedness and response.

The extent of #drought across the U.S. and Puerto Rico held roughly steady this week at 36.7%, the lowest it has been since June '21. The population affected dropped slightly to 81.6 million people.

Some states, like Arizona and Utah, had a good week for #drought conditions. Others, like Texas and Hawaii, dried out. Oregon and Colorado, though, got a taste of both worlds.

#DroughtMonitor 1/10: Good news: CA (of course) and parts of the West saw drought improve (but still mostly remain). Drought is almost gone along the Miss River.
Not good news: The Plains remain in bad shape.

Snow Drought (Really Snow Surplus) Update
The barrage of storms that have hit CA have also spread snow across the Great Basin and Upper Colorado River Basin.
However, small areas of snow drought still exist, particularly in NM.

The snowpack continues to look good across much of the West. Recent atmospheric rivers have put California's San Joaquin watershed up to 274% of normal. Nevada and Utah are also in good shape.
But the coastal Washington and Oregon watersheds are struggling a bit more. #drought

#DroughtMonitor 12/27: Last week was more about the record cold than the precip.
And most of the precip that did fall was relatively light or on areas not in drought.
Parts of the Midwest did see degradations.

After a strong start to the season, #snowpack across the West has fallen somewhat, though it remains comfortably above normal in most places. The #SierraNevada and Oregon Coast are looking particularly strong.
Watersheds in the Southwest, especially NM, continue to struggle.

After a month of improvement, #drought expanded slightly this week to cover 41.5% of the U.S., though the extent of severe or worse conditions did decrease. Drought now affects 104 million people.

U.S. Drought Monitor 12-22-2022:
The extent of #drought in the U.S. decreased 3.29 percentage points, the biggest improvement in a single week since 2019. Drought still covers 41.2% of the country and affects 103.8 million people.

Scattered pockets of intensifying #drought, like in Ohio and Kansas, were more than offset this week by widespread improvement across the Northern Plains, Southeast, and Midwest.
