Some of the best presentations I’ve seen are the ones where I feel like I *finally* understand a concept that I’ve heard about for months or years because of a particularly lucid explanation.

Lot of discussion on junior faculty and paper review requests. My two cents. 1. As said, review papers for journals you want to publish in. 2. There is real benefit to being a “go to” reviewer who is reliable/on time (asking for extra time at invitation is ok!)

also, although our numbers are indeed small, WE DO EXIST! this piece by Dr. G. Gabrielle Starr, President of , in response to successful African American scholars being called "rare creatures" is excellent:

By the numbers: African-American female engineering faculty, a detailed compilation of data by Latrice Bonner in Prisms Magazine. i am part of the 142 tenured or tenure-track faculty, reported in 2017... we need more

  10. i spoke to the manager, asking her to facilitate some training/discussion - first, about what is required. the procedures should be consistent at all airports so travelers know what to expect. (11/13)

  11. (my computer bag and small rollerbag suitcase). i agreed. i had plenty of time before my flight and was open to almost any alternative to opening the milk. it took another 15 minutes. while he inspected my belongings (disheveling my neatly packed bags), (10/13)

  12. i explained that I did not want to open the milk and had never been asked to do that before. i again asked to see the documentation for such a procedure. after more discussion between all the agents, another option was raised - i could have them inspect my other bags (9/13)

  13. follow their instructions. one male patted my shoulder as if to say "calm down" (um, i don't need you to keep me calm and docile. instead, how about you be an advocate and help the others understand my concerns?!?) a manager came over, who happened to be a woman, and (8/13)

  14. the unfrozen milk to come through. (that was NOT an option. among nursing moms, breast milk is considered "LIQUID GOLD". there was no way i would let them throw it away.) so i asked to see another supervisor. by then, 4 male agents were all standing over me, telling me to (7/13)

  16. i absolutely did not want to do that. i did not feel comfortable opening the milk and having some liquid sprayed over the top of the open bag. germs!?! my child would have to ingest this milk! i have NEVER been asked to do this. so, i asked to see where this procedure is (5/13)

  17. the milk is for my third child, and i have flown a lot with and without the kiddos. i have brought breast milk with me many times. but then, another person came up and said i needed to open the unfrozen milk so they could do some sort of vapor test. (4/13)

  18. lots of things to report. firstly, the agent didn't know what to do with the fresh milk. he asked his supervisor, who told him to use a test strip on the bags (without opening them). cool, I have no problem with that; it's the procedure I am used to. (3/13)
