Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, who later became a founder of the Jewish Renewal movement, grew up in Vienna. He remembers the rituals of Simchat Torah, a joyous Jewish holiday that celebrates the completion of a cycle of Torah reading.

Miriam Lichterman recalls the tastes and smells of the Simchat Torah holiday during her childhood in pre-war Warsaw. Miriam later survived the Warsaw Ghetto and Auschwitz-Birkenau and Majdanek concentration camps. #SimchatTorah is celebrated on Oct. 18.
