Thank you, this reminded me that I removed the batteries (and subsequently the whole unit from the wall) like a month ago and never remembered to put it back together.

pretty soon now (if not already) we'll be at the point where if you have a smoke alarm with replaceable batteries, the sensor has probably reached the end of its life and you should replace the whole thing with an integrated 10 year battery
