if it has a timer built in, you can set it for like, 30 mins or something but its genuinely dangerous to leave one running unattended

I've never understood why you shouldn't plug it into a power strip, wouldn't that be safer? it would flip off if things went wrong?

Most extension cords are not rated for or able to deal with the heat that space heaters produce. They are likely to overheat and catch on fire.
