Portable generators produce a lot of carbon monoxide. Can't see carbon monoxide or smell it, and it's very deadly. 20ft is what CPSC considers the safest minimum distance. Check thresholds on your CO alarm. Home ones require a lot of CO for a long time to alert, much more than e.g. OSHA workplace standards allow. The key surprising fact for me was: portable generators run rich, and can't be made to run clean (too hot for passive cooling.)
