Portable generators produce a lot of carbon monoxide. Can't see carbon monoxide or smell it, and it's very deadly. 20ft is what CPSC considers the safest minimum distance. I like to tell it this way: the primary function of portable generators is to poison the operator. They also happen to make some electricity on the side. Treat them accordingly.
