As we honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice this weekend by remembering their service, we are also mindful of the fact that we have to take care of those who came back home with scars we can't see.

my friend was promised if he served a certain number of years in the US military that he and his family would be granted citizenship, after serving the time, they told him to get his family he had to serve 3 more years, then after all this, he still could not bring his parents
-
he now suffers from severe ptsd and lives in america alone without his family, even though he was promised numerous times they could come with him after serving 6+ years active in Afghanistan and Iraq, seeing and experiencing horrifying things

Dad served in Vietnam as Navy artillery mechanic, spent most of his time in combat. Watched all his friends die when his PBR was blown up in middle of night. Hospital pulled out some shrapnel, badly stitched him up, & sent him right back to work on the next boat, same day. 1/3

Dad spent next several decades drinking because that was what passed for mental health treatment at local VA office. He had horrific nightmares for long time & would wake us with his screaming. He doesn't scream as much anymore, but still won't talk about his experience. 2/3

The people around me go to the army because they can't afford college. It's like a dystopian reaping where people disappear from daily life because they aren't born fortunate.
-
And then the people taken by the army never come back the same or ever at all. You feel kinda guilty deep down that you don't have to go through that. You fear those people leaving because they'll be so different. Almost a stranger again.

You’re really courageous to keep this thread alive. The message is clear. Don’t fabricate enemies and shove innocent Americans into wars that kill innocent civilians. You’ve gained nothing from all the wars combined. It’s bee hell for the world.
-
No one making those decisions will see this thread. The real take away for the social media/marketing folks whose brilliant idea this was should be to stop selling and glorifying military service to underprivileged 18 year olds while covering up the consequences and side effects.
