Lakeith Smith didn't shoot A'donte Washington. A police officer did in self-defense. But Smith will serve time as if he had killed the 16-year-old three years ago.https://usat.ly/2GFTeK9

He was a 15 year old child and scared to death??? BS! He knew exactly what he was doing. It doesn't matter if he didn't pull the trigger killing the other criminal. He was a willing participant in the act of a crime. He is as much responsible for the outcome as the others.

One should be held accountable for ONLY THEIR OWN actions. Washington choose to shoot at officers and died because of it. The only thing Smith is guilty of is burglary. His sentence should be based off of that only.

No. The actions of each of these criminals led to the death of the other one. If they had not been doing what they were doing, he would still be alive. Is it fair? No. But life isn't fair. He should've taken the plea deal & he probably would've been out in 5 years.

Using that logic if a drunk driver kills himself in an accident or somebody else, should the person handing him drinks drinks be charged with murder? What happened to accountability for one's own actions?

White people should be charged with a whole lot bc a lot of their actions have leave to the oppression and murder or Black people.

I come from a family with Appalachian roots that worked as migrant laborers. The world is full of opportunity you just have to go out and get it and not sit at home blaming the past while awaiting your next check.

Of course....that's the primary mission of the American criminal justice system....to imprison as many black and brown people as possible, and keep them in the system for the rest of their lives.

The American Criminal Justice System didn't ask them to commit crimes. I hope the rest get life. Stop feeling sorry for criminals

True. Although had the defendants been white the police officer probably wouldn't have murdered the young man and his buddies wouldn't be getting sentenced to life in prison. Stop ignoring the racist unequal application of justice in this country.

I agree there are injustices but don't put yourself in those situations and don't disobey the law and you will be safe regardless of your color

Absolutely. Obeying the law will decrease your chances of being killed or assaulted by the police...this is especially true for people of color. Yet, it's still doesn't change the fact that it's unacceptable that people of color are treated unequal by our justice system.

This sentence is a mess. I highly doubt that a white 15yr. old would have gotten the same sentence.

There are a plethora of studies out that have proven blacks/browns get much stiffer penalties for committing same crime as whites. Guess we're supposed to just add this one to the list!

If these kids were all arrested without incident, they probably get 5 years, maybe the ones who had guns get 10. But because his accomplice decided to shoot at an officer and died, Smith has to serve 65 now? How can anyone think this is reasonable?

This is BULLSHIT! He was 15. So if the kid hadn't been shot, he'd still get 25 years for burglary?! But a man can rape a child (repeatedly) & get 3 -5 years?! I'm so sick of these biased racist mysoginistic laws. Our legal system is corrupt from soup to nuts!

There are some evil people on this feed. My bet is the call themselves Christians. I’m pretty sure they’d crucify Jesus again if he walked among them today.
