Apparently the leadership at Toys R Us were too engrossed in toy play and far too complacent to take competitiveness seriously enough to innovate or merge. Thus an inattentive giant has fallen.

They were tired of trying to turn it around for so long. If it wasn't this year, it would've been next year. Kmart or JC Penney is next.
-
Unlike Toys R Us, Kmart was rescued by Sears in 2004 and remains afloat by way of deep discounts on emerging brands & annual reductions, (e.g. store closings proportional to low sale profits) while JC Penny remains competitive by reducing size & increasing it's product variance.
-
Kmart just closed almost every store in Metro Detroit over the past 5 years. I think there is 1 or 2 left.
-
There are two, both on the fringe of Metro Detroit, 50 miles away from each other. They're done.
