This sounds horrific but it’s what we’re told to do when training for an active shooter situation at the college where I teach. The reasoning is that the shooter could be using the students to access the room. This teacher seems to have followed protocol.

Exactly. Lock down means just that, lock down. Only allow access to principal and first responders...no one else.

Regardless of the proper protocol, these kids were basically left behind on the battlefield, and they have reason to be angry and traumatized.

Agreed.

It’s a tough call. I would never want to make the decision this teacher had to make. To call him a coward is not fair nor is it right. Based off the training The teachers probably received, he made the right decision.

Perhaps there needs to be an investigation into what happened with this teacher. And the testimony of all the students involved in that area at the time. Not okay to lock students out.
-
Actually that is the protocol in a shooting situation. What if he opens the door to let them back in and shooter is right there and kills the whole class. It is a tough situation for everyone but to call this man a coward is not fair.
-
I agree. Just think because students are disputing him being called a hero there needs to be an investigation.

The teacher may have followed protocol but it also makes sense that the students would feel traumatized/betrayed that a teacher they looked up to didn't protect them while they were at their most scared/vulnerable. It's just a horrible situation all the way around.

You really can't train kids for this scenario. The expectations of a 15yr old who is being shot at is never going to line up w/the expectations he/she was told he should have during a drill

Teacher followed protocol...even if it’s your own daughter or son you are to never open that door for fear of the shooter using the kids to get in

Not faulting the teacher, the protocol is to scan the hallway and get students in the room. A sense of safety surrounding drills have to be at heightened alert for all involved- students, teachers, staff. When the alarm goes off many are in drill mode. All drills are real now.

That's strange because at least he was where the bullets were flying and he was unarmed. Meanwhile we have a cop right outside the door - armed and cowering. No matter what happened here with this teacher - he's braver than the candy ass cop w/taxpayer funded weapons training.

Teacher is not a military man. What could he do? Yes, he did not react properly, but he's a simple teacher,

I don’t like picking on the victims or anyone who was under attack that day. People don’t always act rationally when their lives are in danger. Save the hatred and blame for Nikolas Cruz. He’s the real coward who tried to kill them all
