The students would learn a far greater life lesson participating in the walkout

You’re correct, when they get suspended the lesson will be your actions have consequences..... like in the real world.
-
Or stand up for what you believe in or change doesn’t come easy, it comes at a price. Not bad lessons

If I was a teacher at their school I’d walk out with them.
-
If it was my child at that school - I'd walk out with them too.

This is one of the best lessons they will ever learn. They should not be punished for exercising their rights. Don’t squash their enthusiasm or for standing up for themselves. Maybe legislators should listen and take a lesson!

So taking away first amendment rights? Freedom of speech?
-
No one is taking away their First Amendment. But you just can’t walk out of school consequence-free. it’s terrible PR for the school system, i’ll give you that
-
Agreed that you can’t walk out of school w/o consequences, but one would think schools would encourage students - or at least not discourage - those who feel strongly about this issue as it hits so close to home.
-
Definitely a fine line. But I’m sure there are some liabilities on the school’s part if they are perceived to be encouraging students to leave the building. Best case scenario is saying there will be consequences, and then never really giving any
-
Exactly. Or those who leave have to spend time after school working with administrators on possible solutions. Something that works toward finding solutions/answers. Be creative. Hate seeing students punished for being passionate about such a critical issue.
