My mother was equally as wise. We used to visit homes of poor in our parish and I worried that our family, too, might be poor one day. Mom assured me that if this came to pass, it would be OK because love was everything and love didn't cost money.

What a nice man! He gave kids and adults a safe, kind, warm place to visit with his show.

Great share
@USATODAY I grew up watching Mr. Rogers!! My father left when I was five, so I looked for positive role models at school and on tv/movies. Mr. Rogers was one to be admired for his positive influence on young children...It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood

This wonderful man is a treasure. DYK he hired a African American/ gay man. Put him on TV and showed him love and compassion far before it was common to do so. He's a progressive hero.

Empathy is a powerful tool, it's a shame you and so many people in this country haven't learned it.

For kids, an inoculation of gentle warmth against crass sneering cynicism epidemic elsewhere. I wonder how much of today's dark contemptuous tween anomie could be, or could have been, preempted by such a kind friendly presence in kids' world, instead of... well, take your pick
