By the same token, children that get to college without parent-supervised/responsible alcohol consumption engage in reckless binge drinking that culminates in terrible consequences because no one teaches them to drink responsibly. Catch-22.

Parents are the #1 influence on their kids' decisions to drink--or not drink alcohol. So responsibility is key. We have info about social hosting and Good Samaritan laws for each state.https://asklistenlearn.org/parents/keep-them-safe/ …

Then why are Europeans so much more mature about their alcohol use? While American youth have to dodge, hide and sneak the stuff leading to a lot more problems imo

This article seems to imply that kids would disregard the parents attitude toward drinking. Parents who overindulge are giving their kids the impression that doing this is "adult behavior", kids want to grow up. What follows is that moderate behavior by parents is also a model.

If one accepts the theory that alcoholism is a genetic trait, that gives more credence to the idea that the person's behavior can not be moderated. That is a slippery road, and very subjective.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. The issue is not parents approval of alcohol but US society imparting morality and limiting consumption until 21, forcing illegal acts / encouraging binge drinking. If it wasn’t a big deal to get your next beer, you wouldn’t drink everything in sight tonight.
