No, I don’t agree. Unless it’s a company event, it’s not a good idea to socialize outside work with your direct reports and your boss...

That depends on the organisation. I did it when I worked on England. I only gained good friends through it.
-
I have a couple of friends from work, but none reports to me or vice versa.
-
I was good friends with 2 of my bosses and a councillor but we are all decent people. It is the person you befriend and the reason for it that is the problem. I saw it done for the wrong reasons. None of that ended well.

And then you have companies who so say DO NOT socialize with your underlings.
-
Technically, that is the correct way or else you create rumors and conflict of interest very quick. I managed ppl for over 12 years and I never once met them outside work. It’s a fair game.

"one of factors" Shouldn't there be an extra word, like "one of the factors" or "one of many factors"? As for the question, yes, I'd guess it was an important team building exercise. Works great for some people. I am not one of them.

I watched this sorry POS in another dept literally groom his mgr for 1.5 yrs into promoting him to lead. Mgr was forced to retire
-
His Mgr was forced to retire because once he was promoted to lead, the morale in the dept became abysmal. Environment very toxic.
