Utah, known for its high Mormon population, is the most charitable state, according to a recent report. https://usat.ly/2i01gmo pic.twitter.com/NgrFrJ2nad

*If you can call the Mormon church a “charitable organization.”

I don’t deny that the church does good charitable work, but it is a wealthy org. I worked at a small UT nonprofit for 20 yrs. Most nonprofits in the state struggle to survive because the church receives the bulk of donations. Everyone else is fighting for scraps. /1

So I think this annual report is very misleading. In Utah the reply to requests from charities isn’t “I gave at the office,” it’s “I gave at church.”

I certainly donate when I can. But my ability to donate or not is not really related to my point that this report is misleading.

The Church donates more than $40M a year. I’d say they are doing their fair share

Tithing is completely separate from charitable donations (and may i mention completely voluntary) so everyone chill out!!! ✋🏼

it's just tithing, to the LDS church; other charities struggle here

If you read the report, you'd see it's not just tithing. And that tithing isn't actually included anywhere in the study except for maybe a few random confused people may have reported tithing in 1 out of the 14 points they studied.

They’ve gotta give 10% to be a card carrier and go to the top of their heaven so this makes sense #GoUtes

That’s all fine and great but there’s no way this report excludes tithing? Utahns are relatively cheap and throw most of their “giving” under that umbrella at least from my experience. Proud Utahan here by the way and jack Mormon to boot and married to an active Mormon. #GoUtes

Just because you have to be a full tithe payer to be considered a member in good standing doesn't make it mandatory.
