Heard the same story 40 years ago while living in Guam, heard it many times from residents who lived through Japanese occupation

So so you believe she was a prisoner and executed?

That’s the story we always heard , that she was held on Saipan and executed to keep from revealing how much building up of bases the Japanese were doing

So some random guy’s uncle’s tall tale constitutes news these days? Nice to know, @USAToday.

The article states that a reporter back in 1960 found that dozens of locals attested to the same story - a white woman and a white man were imprisoned there as spies in 1937.

Exactly. Quoting a reporter’s (interesting, though unproven) story he first told in his 1966 book isn’t exactly news.

So Japanese military history blogger Kota Yamano said the photo of Earhart ¨was apparently published two years before the famed aviator disappeared.¨ Why didn´t you at least make an attempt to verify his story? THAT is the least I expect, since you mentioned it. #journalism

Ehhh depends who you ask. It's been local "knowledge" around here for ever that Amelia was here. But there's no proof. Just old wives tales from elders.
