Do we really need an article to shame those of us who enjoy buying thoughtful gifts, within our budget, for the people over 18 we care about? Stop buying gifts to impress others, make yourself feel good or that you can't afford - write an "article" about that.

It's super wasteful if you're bad a buying gifts. Most of the reasoning listed in the article has to do with unwanted gifts or undervalued gifts. Stick to the list! If you buy outside someone's wish list, you better really know this person or have a gift receipt.

You could just live within your means when buying gifts for any child or adult.

I have a huge family, high rent, student loans, & a modest income. Rather than "live within my means" to buy a bunch of $2 crap for all the adults in my life, I'd rather spend that money on donations to charity & better gifts for kids in the family.

People don't have the extra $ to spend anymore, and focus on the children. You should never feel obligated to give a gift! You may if you wish & at any time of the year to make someone feel special in your life.

I agree completely. I have always loved everything else about Christmas. Figuring out gifts for adults always does me in.

follow this advice if you want to let childless family members know that they are worthless and mean nothing to you

My family does this. It kind of sucks b/c I love buying gifts for people. I'd prefer a $10-20 maximum per person.

Amen to this. Ditto for adults getting birthday gifts or throwing themselves birthday parties.

Give a gift in their name to the Human Fund. “Money for people” - who wouldn’t appreciate that?pic.twitter.com/RVOV3UziUE

As a single mother who works full time and goes to school full time, Christmas and birthday presents from my family is usually the only way I ever get new clothes for myself. I do understand the reasoning, though.

Cards, cookies and socks are fine if the adults are well off. If the adult needs help, be discreet.
