In the South, Confederate monuments are often protected, and hard to remove thanks to state laws. https://usat.ly/2wiA4HU pic.twitter.com/3FibgAXRgF

I don't know many folks who supported gay marriage in the 50's and 60's. It wasn't a topic of discussion - back then.

The Civil War was about slavery. But ignoring that, exactly what motivation for treason deserves a statue?

The war was about slavery. The statues were erected for Jim Crow & an FU to the civil rights movement. No succession=no need to defend.

They were fighting to leave the US - to become NOT Americans. The first wave of statues were in line with the Jim Crow movement.pic.twitter.com/1LJ3H351dD

The statue pictured is in Franklin, TN. The state law doesn't protect it b/c it's not on public land.

But that doesn't fall under this media agenda in their story. Its called spin. And I agree local communties should make the call.

No reason for intentional spin as there's plenty on public lands. Just pointing out for accuracy.
