Listen to what some of the crowd holler at these referees and you'll understand why there's a shortage, especially in the younger grades.

younger is not high school.
-
Most officials get started @ younger levels. Fair number get fed up b4 they advance to HS. Youth parents/environment are the worst.

And the sad thing is, 90% of those people that are yelling at the officials, don't know the rules anyway.

I have a brilliant idea. Maybe pay them more than minimum wage?
-
They get paid more than minimum wage. Approximately $50 for 2-3 hours in most states and sports
-
Plus driving to and from the game, leaving work, etc. $12 an hour isn't much
-
More than minimum wage

Tell all the asshole parents to stop blaming the officials for their kids' fuck ups & maybe some of them(including me) would return

It's true that yelling at the refs is out of hand. Sports leagues need to get tougher on parents.

I went to a high school soccer game in Texas. The refs were dreadful. Couldn't blame them cuz there were only 2 of them instead of 3

my son was a grade 8 recreational league ref when he was 12. The money was great but the abuse was awful. I let him quit.
