The controversial "Silent Sam" statue on the campus of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill has been toppled by protesters. Students, faculty and alumni have called the statue a racist image and asked officials to remove it. https://usat.ly/2Pqvmi4 pic.twitter.com/S7kNMuYsyi

Sanitizing history. A generation or two from now people won't even belive the Civil War or slavery even happened. "Slaves? In the US? ...no, I can't believe that." This is why Auschwitz will remain intact in Germany forever, even though neo-Nazis visit it like some shrine.

I understand some people are offended by this, but you can’t go around destroying public property! If you don’t like it, take the steps to LEGALLY remove the statue. Petition local authorities. Don’t be a lowlife and destroy property.

These people are acting like thugs from the cultural revolution in China and the taliban and isis in Middle East. Disgraceful behaviour. Look at them. Mob mentality.

We need to memorialize the bad along with the good, and teach that history to future generations to avoid repeating such attrocities. We preserve the lessons of the holocaust by preserving many of the concentration camps. Likewise the lessons of the Civil war need to be taught .

No it's erasing a tribute to the memory of a satanic being. Replace it with a strong positive historical figure/moment that lends to the narrative of overcoming white supremacy so that we can remember how it will end and should end.

And this is what happens when the ungrateful are given a free ride to college on taxpayer money. The ones who are paying their own way are down the street in the library.
