The consequences devastate families like the Mentions of Nesmith, South Carolina. YoLanda Mention died after her dangerously high blood pressure went untreated. Her husband now raises the couple's three children alone. https://usat.ly/2OgpRlE  #protectmomspic.twitter.com/0LjnZr5JL7

We need more midwives practicing the midwifery model of care in the hospital systems. We need to holistically care for pregnant women. Prenatal care is more than taking vitals, listening to baby, & asking if the mother has any questions. What happens between appointments matters.

I hemorrhaged after delivering my son ( now 8) but, was sent home anyway. Less than 1 week later I was hyper reflexive and was diagnosed with what they called delayed “pre-eclampsia”.

Taking a plug and play approach to pregnancy and childbirth has utterly failed women and babies in the US. Medically managing the process with interventions that increase risk leads to more risk and poorer outcomes. It’s not okay the amount of morbidity that occurs.

Great story and in depth reporting! This is unacceptable in a country with our resources. Thank you for shining a light on this subject. Women deserve better.

Better make some laws to tell women how to have babies they aren't allowed to terminate. Maybe lock all women up till they deliver. Maybe just lock all women up since they are not allowed to choose what happens to them anyway. right "pro life"?

Great article.. you missed a critical point though when looking at California and their quality improvement. Nurse to patient ratios have everything to do with that, the more patients per nurse the less time nurses have to observe, focus and get patients medications on time.

My daughter who is 4 was born full term but, again complications arose after delivery. A week following delivery, I was admitted to the hospital and treated for a pulmonary embolism. Both times the anxiety of thinking I was going to die leaving my kids motherless was overwhelming

It is terrible that women's care is so substandard. High blood pressure is easy to remedy. bleeding to death is easy to track. My take away is women's lives are of little value in the USA. Idk if staff dismisses women's complaints until it is too late. Shameful

It is vital to use good guidelines. Evidence and best practice guidelines save lives. Use more properly trained midwives.
