I know many elderly people with handguns. They own them, legally. No avenue exists for taking them. They would just buy another.

Unless one of your peeps has to die in a nursing home or hospital you don't know. I've lost one brother in a nursing home and the other refused help because of their crookedness. If I ever had to be put in one of those I would opt for suicide too. It's sad alltogether.

It depends on the place. I work in assisted living home frequently and most are nice and the residents seem relatively happy. All of them seem better then prison. All of it depends on the state of the resident. If they suffer from severe dementia there is no happy ending

Yes I understand what your saying. I was the business office manager in a home and I do see it from the heads in beds perspective. That's how they operate. It's a tough deal. Good in one sense and bad in many others. Thanks for sharing. :)

The article is really tragic. Hate to say it, But this is more a story about poorly stored firearms. Why did this woman have access to two pistols at age 92?

No it’s not lol. The woman bought one of the pistols in the 70’s and her husband gave her the other. Given that she moved in with her son 6 months ago, he likely didn’t know about them. Has nothing to do with gun storage. Stop reaching

After reading this article, the first thing I will do, say if my spouse’s 90 year old grandparent moves in, I’m asking, “do you have any guns? In this house we keep them locked up.” Problem averted. The son could have asked. It’s irresponsible. Can’t now, he’s dead.

        1) You’re assuming he didn’t ask. 2) You’re assuming the mom would’ve been truthful. Obvious trust issues exist if you conceal guns before a confrontation

The lesson I learned from this story: Check your elderly houseguest & all their belongings for firearms. Do it while they’re sleeping if you have to. You can take away whatever you want. In laws are tough enough to deal with, I’m gonna give them more ammo? Literally? No thx.

Fair enough, although that’s commonly referred to as theft. You could have police confiscate if you proved beforehand that someone was a danger to themselves and others in some states.

I've dealt w/enough Police that I'd feel comfortable explaining, "NaNa is 90 years old & was hiding 2 pistols, we held them from her for her safety & for our family's, I hope you can understand, Officer, thank you." Police in NYC are usually pretty reasonable about these things.

Firearms are less common where I live, so is the idea that someone could have one in your house unknown to those that live there. Law & technicality aside, this was a tragedy & quite possibly could have been avoided. I feel awful for these women.
