Obviously this person has not been around someone terminally ill or has an illness such as Dementia. If they were, perhaps they would see what it’s like to live in their shoes. When it’s the author’s turn they can opt of out a DNR rather than dictating another’s choice.

I invite the author to meet with hospice patients, visit group homes w/ people who have Dementia (or their children), or visit with people at the end of a terminal illness. I would be curious if their opinion would remain the same.

Funny thing is we go to great lengths to ensure our animals don’t suffer and put them down humanely...but we are ok making people suffer when the outcome is obvious

It’s a bit ridiculous right? I’m imagining the author has no prior experience w/ terminal illness or an illness that robs one of all dignity & functioning. That may be their choice, but I take issue with robbing others of their right to choose.

Agreed ...seeing loved ones go through terminal illness brings perspective....HBO had great documentary on this topic

I think this opinion piece is baloney. I'm 72 and in good health. My brother is 85 and has late-stage ALS. He can do nothing for himself and struggles to breathe, yet he would not choose to end his life. If I were in his position, I would and I should have that option.

That’s a dumb opinion! In the last 30 years we haven’t learned how to extend life. We have learned how to prolong death. More and more elderly spend far to much time “living” in a nursing home bed. It needs to be ok to help those that want to, move on.

No, it's about those people getting to decide for themselves, and this opinion piece is a stupid opinion.

It is an individual decision. Individual. Not taken to committee or a decision board. I have a DNR. I worked in hospitals and have seen nursing homes. My life, my decision.

Pure idiocy. An actale argument that terminally ill people should suffer so that their family can have the joy of caring for them longer. Complete and total dribble.

Completely disagree. When a person isn’t able to live a normal life and in right state of mind decided to die with dignity, then who r we to say “Yes or No”.

By all means, force someone who is already dying and in extreme pain alive against their will. (Pain management only keeps them alive against their will longer and adds more costs that the family has to bear.)

Easy for YOU to say. Nice and healthy, you are, I'm sure. So you can Lord your 'morals' over the unwashed folks who, even though they are terminally ill, have to suffer to the end, no matter what.

I quoted that excerpt from the article. I don't agree with it, I just wanted to highlight it as problematic. IMO

Wrong. It is of course about autonomy, individual choice, and who better to decide when an inevitable ending has arrived?
