I think people are just more open about their lack of empathy toward others. They have no compunction with putting their nasty attitudes on display in public, on social media, etc.

there's no evidence that Americans have ever been compassionate.

I'd say about half of Americans are for empathy, and half against. Just like the voting polls and party affiliation are usually split about 50/50. Take a look at some of the folks here excusing themselves from caring for their fellow man: they're all Republicans. Coincidence?

It's the difference between thinking with your heart and thinking with your brain, I guess.

It could be. It's like people are either right or left brained. Everyone has a dominant hand, and few people are ambidextrous. But surely, we should all strive to cultivate both logical and intuitive thinking. Ours and our children's futures depends on it.

To an extent I think you're probably right. Although we shouldn't fall into the trap of where we care or sacrifice so much for others that it's a detriment to ourselves, our families or our country. We need to seek mutually beneficial relationships, not parasitic ones.

Compassion is going out the window. Overpopulation, increases in crime, fake news, illegal migration all taking by a toll. There is only so much to do around - best reserved for family, friends and causes close to the heart.

It's work being civilized in such a selfish uncivilized world. But I give smiles and help in the parking lot to anyone who needs it. We cannot give up on one another. We're all we've got

Yes, society is far coarser than it was two or three decades ago. The “marketing” of compassion, however, has never been a bigger buisiness.
