Your support makes it possible for us to cover both events like this - and undertake the research about the larger trends and historical patterns. Let's look at the history behind "straight pride" provocations going back years...https://unicornriot.ninja/donate/
Reactionary ‘heterosexual pride’ rhetoric has been cultivated in the U.S. in response to LGBTQ ‘pride’ events, themselves rooted in the Stonewall uprising and anti-LGBTQ state repression of 1969.
The primary goal of this tactic is to normalize far-right presence in the streets. A secondary goal is to inspire protests picked up by mainstream media. Resulting media coverage can be spun as Leftist negativity towards straight people by the far-right and reactionaries
In 1990 'blue squares' discovered chalked around Harvard Yard and campus sidewalks in Boston. The square was said to represent four values: faith, family, country and community.
The 'blue squares' were considered by pro-LGBTQ students and allies as an attack on the re-appropriated ‘pink triangle’ symbol originally meant to identify non-heterosexuals during Nazi Germany, including in death camps during the Holocaust.pic.twitter.com/m2QSXxjRE3
Also in 1990 a conservative student group held a ‘Straight-Pride Rally’ at UMass-Amherst. Bibles & American flags waved as ‘Young Americans for Freedom’ “shouted vitriolic denouncements of lesbians, gays, and bisexuals.” Students on that campus formed the ‘Heterosexual Club.’
In 2011 Towson University (MD) held a ‘Straight Pride Day‘ organized by Matthew Heimbach thru his campus chapter of Youth for Western Civilization. His ‘Straight Pride Day’ included a speech by Bay Buchanan (Pat Buchanan’s sister) and rhetoric against both communists & Muslims
‘It’s OK To Be White’ campus events organized by white supremacists and promoted on racist websites are similar in aim to the ‘Straight Pride’ gatherings; the goal is to provoke a reaction that can be spun as unreasonable and irrational.
At the 2019 Straight Pride event in Boston, in dozens of videos shared on social media, many protesters can be seen being battered with batons and bicycles, and doused with pepper spray.https://twitter.com/broderick/status/1167896634174267393 …
As anti-racists gathered to oppose the rally, Boston PD repeatedly made sudden arrests and attacked protesters without apparent provocation.https://twitter.com/UR_Ninja/status/1167831472482316295 …
It later became known that megaphone seizures and facial coverings were cited as excuses for police advances and arrests during #StraightPridehttps://twitter.com/UR_Ninja/status/1167903594122625024 …
A multi-jurisdiction contingent of motorcycle police under the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) blasted the counter-demonstrating crowd with high volume sirenshttps://twitter.com/UR_Ninja/status/1167857794122276866 …
Despite low crowd tension, a motorcycle group rolled south on Congress Street in the midst of the counter-demonstrators, while the event was winding down.https://twitter.com/UR_Ninja/status/1167875172004548608 …
Unicorn Riot asked BPD Captain Danilecki in charge of mounted unit what their tactical objective was. Brandishing a can of pepper spray, gave no statement besides “Move back.” The Captain lost control of his pepper spray can, dropping it into crowd.
Officers began pepper-spraying many individuals including our Unicorn Riot reporter.https://twitter.com/UR_Ninja/status/1167897973465870337 …
Dozens of individuals were exposed to pepper spray, and many near the Congress Street median fence were struck by COBRA officers wielding their bicycles as blunt weapons.https://twitter.com/socialistdogmom/status/1167896587638456320?s=20 …
In the months that followed, community members in the region sought answers as to why their local police officers had been dispatched to such a poorly managed event in a city like Boston that prides itself on its tolerant reputation. Unicorn Riot will continue to report on this.pic.twitter.com/USl9l026Rt
