UNSW just cut all its childcare. We must must must have an equity lens on all COVID actions, lest we undo 30+ years of progress.pic.twitter.com/dMWXcetl2L

We would like to clarify and confirm that only Kanga's House will close from the end of 2020, and our remaining three on-campus child care centres will remain operational. No child currently attending will lose their place in a UNSW childcare centre for 2021.

Staff at the centre were told they have been told 3 month timeframe and only the very oldest age group at Kangas will be staying to the end of the year.

yes I did clarify that in a follow up tweet. Open but privatised/outsourced.

You’re still going to outsource the remaining three centres though right? Coz outsourcing has worked a dream in the past. Can’t see any issues with putting profit before childhood education.... 🤔

Is that dependent on finding a third party operator? If none come forward unsw will guarantee their ongoing operation

I had a friend who had a baby six months after we finished the HSC. She was able to defer her course at UNSW until the following year and her baby went to Kanga's the following year. She completed her degree. Perhaps it will now be more difficult for today's students.

Disgusting. I was considering studying there next year but this is not an impressive move

If they go to an external provider, they won't be UNSW childcare centres anymore, regardless of the branding. The thing that makes Early Years so special is that we are all part of the UNSW community, working together to achieve great things.

UNSW Early Years is amazing. If UNSW2025 strategy is truly about "transformative learning and commitment to advancing a just society", we should be championing and developing them, not casting them aside for a short-term gain of a few bucks. (Traded for long-term loss in morale.)

I’m not sure that cutting 99 (34%) of UNSW childcare places is quite the reassuring news that you seem to think. #SaveUNSWEarlyYears
