And spawned a Rapidly growing $9B export industry... For China.. I've seen first hand how big wages paid by mining industry cripples local manufacturing. You just can't compete, You train up a tradie then they go. Aust businesses and policy can't seem to invest in the long game.

I toured this lab in the 90s. They were determined to build the industry here, and burnt years trying. Nobody in Oz (industry, gov, VC) would invest. I reckon they had no choice but to leave.
