Today Japan remembers the tragic loss of over 18,000 missing or dead on March 11, 2011 in an #earthquake and #tsunami which also destroyed a nuclear power plant. Some 40,000 people are still displaced. It has created a deeper understanding of disaster risk in the country.pic.twitter.com/D7JOaHqfhL

My military unit, which specialized in planning, deployed to Japan to help U.S. forces plan humanitarian & disaster assistance, and also assist evac planning of 90,000 people -- would've been the largest evac operation in U.S. military history. Luckily no such evac was required.

Very interesting time in Okinawa working with the Marines and State Deparment on that evac planning.

@poppyworldwide I remember seeing your tweet about being scared on this day in 2011. Was 11:00 pm here in California & you described shaking felt in Tokyo. There was no news coverage yet in the US, but Twitter lit up with people sharing tweets of earthquake & tsunami.
