Australian Standards suggest that with ground fuels less than 2 tpHa near homes; 6 , 20 to 100 M from structures; 12.5 tpHa in forest & 4.5 in grasses - fires can be controlled. Way too much fuel allowed near buildings & in landscape - no enforcement - we pay a high price, sad

The story is deficient in that it only mentions strong winds but neglects to mention key factor - massive Fuel loads which can be controlled in advance if there is a will to do so. Reducing the fuel load is the most effective way to reduce intensity of

and yet there are differing options as to the effectiveness of hazard reduction burns, with the recent fires going straight over the top of recently burnt areas, rendering them completely ineffective.
