BSM has demanded UNC send our Anti-Racist Alerts via the Alert Carolina system, so students know when dangerous white supremacists are on campus; & make necessary improvements to the Unsung Founders Memorial, which is often targeted by racists & disrepected by passersby.

CW Racism [rest of thread] We sent out an alert on Sat. when 2 Alamance Co.-based racists, Thomas May & Joey Wardwell, paraded on McCorkle Place w/ Conf. Battle Flags then stood & later spat on Unsung Founders, a memorial to the enslaved & free Black people who built the univ.

We do not want to platform these racists, but we feel it’s critical to share some video from the incident to illustrate what UNC allows to take place, creating a hostile and dangerous environment for Black people on this campus.

When asked why he would display the Conf. Battle Flag at the monument, Thomas May (who participated in 1/6 insurrection at the Capitol) said it was to let people know “who’s the boss,” then laughed about his desire to enslave people himself and made a whipping motion.

In this clip May threatens to pour acid on Unsung Founders. Later he said, “I can’t wait until this gets torn down…I’m not gonna do it, but I know some people who will.” UNC Police walked by, did nothing, & stood far away for over an hour while community confronted the racists.

We are not advocating more police presence; UNC Police have a habit of protecting racists and brutalizing anti-racists. We are merely pointing out UNC PD’s utter disregard for the safety of Black students.

When asked to get off of the monument and leave, May flashed a white power sign, sang “Dixie,” and both used the n-word repeatedly, referring to both the Black people on campus and the monument. At one point Wardwell said, “Good thing my daddy ain’t here… KKK.”
