Amid an increasingly complex operating environment, in which Afghan women have been banned from working for national & international NGOs & the UN, funding for the #Afghanistan appeal has dried up. This comes at a time when the country is at the highest risk of famine in 25 yrs.

Just finished an emergency meeting on the humanitarian crisis in #Afghanistan. I underscored that women are essential to all aspects of 's work. Together with partners, we must reach the 20M Afghans that need emergency food right now – 10M of whom are women & girls.

Funding for the Afghanistan appeal is drying up putting millions of lives at risk. Already, the food basket has had to be cut to half due to insufficient resources. If funding is not urgently secured, millions of Afghans will be staring down the barrel of famine, disease & death.

We continue to engage with de facto authorities on cases but are dismayed by lack of information provided, despite ongoing requests. We call for the immediate release of all those arbitrarily detained. No Afghan should be detained for exercising their freedom of expression.

Female staff members are essential to carry out our work, including the delivery of life-saving aid. The voices of women & girls remain underrepresented in humanitarian decision-making. But when they are included, the outcomes are stronger for all.

Banning Afghan women from working with in #Afghanistan is utterly despicable. Taliban leaders appear to be actively working to intimidate and incapacitate half the population. They must stop this systematic, relentless assault on the people.

The ban on female natl staff working with the UN represents yet another cruel blow against Afghan women everywhere, not least among I/NGOs who shoulder the mainstay of the humanitarian response, and who have done so under very difficult conditions since December. We 🙏🏻 them.

Banning Afghan women from working with the UN in Afghanistan is an intolerable violation of the most basic human rights. I call on the Taliban to immediately revoke this decision & reverse all measures restricting women’s & girls’ rights to work, education & freedom of movement.

I strongly condemn the prohibition of our Afghan female colleagues from working in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province. If this measure is not reversed, it will inevitably undermine our ability to deliver life-saving aid to the people who need it.

The in #Afghanistan expresses serious concern that female national UN staff have been prevented from reporting to work in Nangarhar province. We remind de facto authorities that United Nations entities cannot operate and deliver life-saving assistance without female staff.

Despite Afghanistan being world’s largest & most severe humanitarian crisis, the 2023 appeal has received less than 5% of its requirement, making it the lowest funded aid operation globally. Without urgent resources, millions of pple risk missing out on lifesaving aid, incl. food
