"In the past 40 years, since AIDS was first officially reported, we have made huge progress in turning the epidemic around. Today, 75% of all people living with HIV are now on treatment. That’s more than 27 million people!" says @Winnie_Byanyima.

Progress however has been slower in reducing new HIV infections, which declined by just 30% in the past 10 years.

Globally the 2020 targets were missed. But dozens of countries reached or even exceeded them.
"This proves that the targets were not just aspirational but they were achievable. Where investments met ambition there has been huge progress," says @Winnie_Byanyima.

"On the other hand, the regions with the largest resource gaps, with punitive laws, countries which have not taken a rights-based approach to health have fared the worst," says @Winnie_Byanyima.

"Countries which punish, ignore, stigmatize and leave key populations—which make up 62% of new HIV infections worldwide—on the margins, also leave them out of reach of HIV services," says @Winnie_Byanyima.

"Women and girls are continuing to be left behind," says @Winnie_Byanyima.
In sub-Saharan Africa six out of seven new HIV infections among adolescents aged 15 to 19 years in the region are among girls!

#COVID19 has shown the fragility of health and development gains made in recent years and has exposed glaring inequalities.
"There are both lessons to take from the AIDS response and there are lessons to learn from the COVID response," says @Winnie_Byanyima.

To get the world on track to end AIDS, UNAIDS has developed a #GlobalAIDSstrategy with new targets to reach by 2025.
"These ambitious BUT achievable targets have been included into the Political Declaration which we urge countries to adopt," says @Winnie_Byanyima.

Governments must commit to take a people centred, rights-based approach to HIV, to work on policy and law reform, to engage & support communities, and to end inequalities.

To get back on track to end AIDS by 2030, we need to recognise young people in all their diversity, recognize their choices and respect their rights, says @maxminaj2.
