Putin as personality requires respect and puting him in corner where he can't escape, or which would leave him out of power would probably lead to show off force just because he can. Smart thing would be to negotiate deal where he would somehow feel not ashamed,

Unfortunately thinking of such a deal requires a lot of mental arithmetics if Ukraine wants to achieve something other than a lot of concessions to Russia.
