  7. The snakes of the can swim! The Northern watersnake is a sssstrong sssswimmer and lives in and around wetlands, ponds, and streams. They are distinguished by the dark red crossbands on their backs, although they can be all black.

  8. Painted can often be seen basking on rocks and logs near calm water. Like wood frogs, painted turtles can survive very cold winter temperatures.

  11. We cannot believe this beautiful duck lives right here at the HEEP. Male Wood Ducks are unmistakable with their incredible feather colors and patterns. Females are light brown overall with a light gray head and blue wing patch. @ducksofUConn

  13. This weeks is famous for its adaptability. Racoons usually live near wooded lakes and streams, but can be found in agricultural and urban areas (and other areas of campus!). Dexterous front paws and an omnivorous diet allow these animals to eat almost everything!

    This year, UConn launched a new environmental literacy general educational requirement that ensures student graduates having taken at least one three-credit course anchored to environmental topics.

  16. Great Horned owls can be hard to spot, but they do call the HEEP home. They prey on rodents, raptors, and even other owls. American Crows are known to mob Great Horned Owls because the crows know that these owls are deadly predators.

  17. Today's is the white-tailed deer! Connecticut is home to over 100,000 of these guys, a massive rebound from just a century ago when they were nearly eradicated in the state. They are commonly seen in small herds, and are most active at dawn and dusk.
