Matter and antimatter... what's the matter?! Our latest blog post on baryogenesis and the early Universe, by 3rd year grad student of particle physics, Jessica Howard! Read here: (Quarky comic by Jessica Howard)

Exactly! You can see the ice-albedo feedback runaway at around 80% land coverage for the hot stars (G, F), whereas landplanets around M-dwarfs might not be susceptible to this (for ~present day Earth levels of instellation).

Thanks everyone for coming out to our training workshop (and definitely thanks and UCI Center for Cosmology for generous sponsorships)! Hope we've managed to motivate and instill *healthy respect* for the upcoming proposal deadline ☠️😂

Not only do they work hard, but they play hard too! 💙💛 Great to see our Gradletes (grad students in ) play against our Mathletes (grad students & faculty in ) and promote a healthy work-life balance! Go team! 🏀 | |

  6. water ice on M-dwarf planets absorbs more energy than it would on Earth as water ice is quite absorptive in the near-infrared region. This keeps the planet warmer than it would be if it was orbiting a Sun-like star, (4/n)

  10. New paper from professor Aomawa Shields and postdoc Andrew Rushby, and it's all about planets around cooler stars than the Sun! Here's a link to the paper, followed by the takeaway from Rushby (thread):

The force of gravity is what attracts mass, but that's assuming it's a force; if General Relativity is correct then it's just mass bending spacetime, thus holding masses in a well, like cherries in a bowl. Thanks for playing!

The electromagnetic force holds atoms together by holding electrons bound to nuclei. The weak force is what causes things like radioactive decay, and produces neutrinos!

The correct answer to was strong force! The strong force is a short ranged force that can overpower other forces when particles are close enough, thus holding nuclei together. Also holds quarks together to form protons and neutrons!
