I’d argue that not understanding the functionality in a chunk of your application’s code is about as sketchy as not understanding what a third party library is doing there.

And it applies everywhere! I can’t think of a project that wouldn’t benefit from good docs. I’ve spent all morning in the lab solely working on documentation and that doesn’t bother me. I’ll hack stuff in the afternoon!

Who in the world strives to do ANY project without documenting it? Talk about working harder....

Folks who have lost sight of the value of things like documentation and testing. They’d rather build a shiny, attractive tower atop a crumbling foundation than spend time repairing the cracks because “no one will see those fixes.”

It helps you write better code now. It helps suggest the tests you should write. Also, I've been writing documentation and stopped and thought "Now that I am typing this out in whole sentences, this seems like a really bad idea. I need a different approach."
-
If you set your default to ‘my ideas are good’, and never evaluate them, you could never have a bad idea again
