Want to explore an alternative approach to with a minimal ? This will: 🌾synthesize anode materials from barley husks 🔋assemble Li-ion batteries with an established production line 📈investigate battery performance ➡️

The global lithium-ion battery market will grow by 12.3% annually between 2021 and 2030, to exceed $116bn in value. Expanding production capacity and resolving sustainability issues of Li-ion batteries is a key part of the UK government's zero-emission strategy. Technologically, the 2020s needs to be the decade of battery supply proliferation that will satisfy increased demand for EVs, for better batteries with a high specific capacity, fast charging ability, and improved stability. Silicon-based materials have a larger specific capacity than other materials and as such battery manufacturers are focussing on developing high-capacity lithium-ion batteries with anodes made of silicon nanoparticles. However, their current methods for generating silicon nanoparticles from synthetic sources are complicated, expensive and generate a high carbon footprint. Alternative approaches are required to guarantee the volume of supply and production of batteries with an acceptable carbon footprint.
