Puzzle: It's becoming desirable to live in a community that's roughly self-sufficient (minimal outsourcing of food, childcare, etc). But such communities tend to become monoculture echochambers, or worse, mind-warping cults. How do I have my cake and eat it too? @normonics

Perhaps there are pre-existing self-sufficient communities that have attained enough scale for there to be mental and ideological diversity? Eg kibbutzs, coops, watered down communes, etc....

My previous compromise here was to slowly create a cultural neighborhood inside a larger city (eg Chinatown), but that's too much outsourcing for an age of systemic chaos.

Another way of framing the desirable: a self-sufficient *town.* Something larger than Dunbar's # to afford mental diversity but much smaller than a "city," since then you're more vulnerable to systemic chaos.

Besides mental diversity, you also want a large enough dating pool, as @RichDecibels importantly points out in https://www.microsolidarity.cc/articles/proposal … ...Not to mention all sorts of other network effects you need at least town-level scale for.

i like @RichDecibels' microsolidarity proposal among other things b/c he suggests that such communities should be in contact with a network of other such communitieshttps://www.microsolidarity.cc/articles/proposal …

Without having read it, I like the sound of it. But in the age of COVID, it seems hard to sync risk-minimization protocols. A recent experiment here was Bay Area rationality and rat-adjacent houses, where AFAIK, things have not gone as smoothly as hoped

I have a lot of ideas here (and extensive experience). In a hurry at the moment but commenting to remind myself to double back/would be interested to have this conversation.

I've been thinking about that in the context of tourism 2.0:https://twitter.com/FPallopides/status/1262482537118674944 …

Idea 1: Transparent Capitalist Cults Avoid the pathologies of closed cults by incentivizing openness: - market your communal lifestyle - make money by hosting guests (but not too many, more on that later)

Yeah I think this is a promising direction as long as the transparent capitalist cult can avoid the eventual fate of becoming mainly a money-making machine. Although the tourism bit is going to be tough to scale given covid

All that remains is to pick your cult wisely. Keeping in mind the best cults have many orders or niches in which different personalities can thrive and contribute.
