We can and should address the underlying causes of the rise in illicit Fentanyl use. But what of the thousands of people already using it in #SanFrancisco? Are they a lost cause? Do we just give up on them?https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/How-does-San-Francisco-s-overdose-crisis-16283106.php …

What about the 248 drug dealers arrested from Jan-May of this year? Many of whom not only sell illicit Fentanyl but are repeat offenders? They are literally bringing the Tenderloin community to its knees. We must hold them accountable or more people will die of overdose.

Illicit Fentanyl isn't Crack. It's not even Heroin. It's the most lethal drug to ever hit the streets in our history. And we need a historic response.
@chesaboudin with respect, if you won't help us with interdiction, we will find someone who will.2 replies 4 retweets 21 likesShow this thread -

It's more nuanced than even that. In Lisbon and Amsterdam, they broke up open air drug scenes. Offered better treatment options, TOD, SIS's and MAT. At the same time, they used the police/courts to arrest and prosecute drug dealers/traffickers. They found balance. Can we?

This is a mischaracterization.. Even the dissuation courts of portugal stressed NON mandatory treatment.. They dont force patients. What worked their was massive public health and harm reduction..

And prosecution/jailing of drug dealers and drug traffickers. It's all there to research.

Ive read the research.. We have research that shows that arresting drug dealers/ jail doesn't reduce drug use and overdose.. I think we need a whole overhaul of how we think about drug dealing Internationally it just breeds more violence especially in under resourced communities

"Another vital distinction in the decriminalization of drugs in Portugal is that drug dealers are still subject to criminal charges. The distinction between drug dealers and personal users is determined by supply at the time of apprehension." https://borgenproject.org/decriminalization-of-drugs-in-portugal/ …

Will it work here in the United States? I don't know. Portugal's culture frowns on illicit drug use. Whereas here we are attempting to normalize it. That's a mistake. In my opinion.
