Verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance. We recognize that we have created this confusion and need to resolve it. We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon

5 / We are conducting an initial review of verified accounts and will remove verification from accounts whose behavior does not fall within these new guidelines. We will continue to review and take action as we work towards a new program we are proud of.

This makes no sense. It says you aren't accepting public submissions, yet new accounts are in fact being verified. How?
-
Most accounts that are verified are of public interest and were not submitted.
-
But they are saying that they don’t want to give the impression that they are endorsing when they verify accounts. So if they are the only ones determining what is ‘of the public interest’ they then really are endorsing.
-
Actually, it would be very annoying, except that the verified accounts are already a complete hodge podge of 'the famous' and the wannabees. As to
@SteveOfTech theory, I'm a freelance journalist and well-known (worldwide) author and I could not get my a/c verified, never told why -
*not worldwide

-
Sorry, that was intended just for the Twitter bots! I agree, of course! Seerious point to Twitter was I have books translated all round the world - and those readers might find it useful to have a pointer as to who is who.
-
Not being able to verify my account causes me to be reluctant to share more public interest items - as I do not want anyone trying to duplicate my account.

I think I should be verified too because I have 31 verified followers and have a well known Instagram account (2 actually) and is well known on Facebook and in the gaming area. So yeah I feel you.
-
Umm... When you are following like twice your follower count? "Well known"?

No complaints about amount. "Well Known" is not true.
-
I also never said I’m well known on Twitter. If you read it carefully, I said on Instagram and Facebook. Not Twitter. You don’t need to just be famous on Twitter to get verfied. Now I’m not saying I’m super famous.
-
Insta & FB don't have anything to do with Twitter. I've seen multiple people say what you said. Twitter has their own guidelines. They also don't care how many verified accounts follow you. Especially when your ratio is 1 follower for every 3 you follow.
-
Your completely missed my point, and misunderstand what I said. Please make sure that you read a tweet all the way before replying, to save you from embarrassment :)
