Inclusive language plays a critical role in fostering an environment where everyone belongs. At Twitter, the language we have been using in our code does not reflect our values as a company or represent the people we serve. We want to change that. #WordsMatterhttps://twitter.com/negroprogrammer/status/1278728952522043393 …

Twitter eng recently shared that we would be making the language in our code, docs, and configs more inclusive. I want to speak on how we got here and what we’ve done so far. https://www.cnet.com/news/twitter-engineers-replace-racially-loaded-tech-terms-like-master-slave/ …

We’re starting with a set of words we want to move away from using in favor of more inclusive language, such as:pic.twitter.com/6SMGd9celn

There is no switch we can flip to make these changes everywhere, at once. We will continue to iterate on this work and want to put in place processes and systems that will allow us to apply these changes at scale. We’re focusing on these areas 👇

          1. Migrating source code and changing configuration by going through our existing code, IDing violating terms with new warning tools, and changing to the new inclusive terminology. Automated tools and linters are being developed in order to minimize manual effort for developers.

          2. Updating documentation across internal resources, Google Docs, runbooks, FAQs, readmes, technical design docs, and more. We are also implementing a browser extension that will help our teams identify words in documents and web pages, and suggest alternative inclusive words.

This isn't just about eng terms or code. Words matter in our meetings, our conversations, and the documents we write. We know there’s still a lot of work to do, but we’re committed to doing our part. #UntilWeAllBelong

While who ever came up with this stupidity is dealing with their inner demons as to whether or not they may be seen to be racist, sexist anything "ist" every one else has the sense to realise that by changing a few words we change nothing and just add more insanity to the world.
