  9. Debates about Tesla have been tiresome and reductive for a long time now, at least in part because they are invariably built on huge assumptions. There needs to be a lot more focus placed on interrogating those assumptions, instead of simply nodding, smiling and building on them.

  10. This is not about Tesla. There is a massive and super-important discussion to be had here without even mentioning a single name in the space. It even goes beyond cars, to questions about why new tech would even sustain the car market when truly disruptive options exist (or will).

  11. Some questions I'd like to have seen asked: -why is the market transitioning from sedans to trucks/SUVs faster than from ICE to EV? -why did EV sales fall in the two biggests markets in H2 2019? -why were hybrid sales up >20% in those two markets absent any subsidies?

  12. When you dig into the data, it's clear that this narrative is more approachable to Joe Public than it is accurately descriptive of the underlying dynamics. It's a narrative that's been in search of evidence for decades, not a reflection of what's actually happening on the ground.

  13. Having spent a decade studying the auto sector and the last ~5 years increasingly focused on questions of "what's next," the idea that a single easily-divined narrative like "all cars are going electric, anyone falling behind on EVs is dead" encapsulates such complexity is scary.

  14. Fascinating that a host asked if people need to be experts to understand ARK's genomics plays, but everyone smiles and nods at massive unsupported assumptions in their Tesla analysis. For some reason, the auto sector is seen as easy to sum up in Joe Public-friendly platitudes.

    Just heard Max Warburton, one of the most readable, grounded and knowledgeable financial auto analysts around, is moving to Daimler as a special advisor to the board. Good for Daimler, bloody awful for journos in this space
